Cautiously dubbed trip-hop by some, they were inevitably associated with the then zen like torchbearers of downtempo, Portishead. Slow pulsating beats, yes – existential, noir inflected cinema beatsters, no. And this really only goes to prove it.
Moving away from the sporadically ecletic roots of their previous albums, Otherwise (to be followed in July by the release of the album, “Charango“ ) shifts it’s emphasis to the UK Garage scene: distressed hi-hats sizzling, and Jarre’s Oxygen inflected robotics all a-2-stepping. As a signal that Morcheeba are back in the driving seat and have been keeping their vinyl collection up to date, this release works very well. It’s hypnotic, it’s infectious, and all in all it’s eager to please. But hold the applause till you’ve heard the album, yeah? Afterall, who can you trust?
