Always And Forever – Space Cowboy

Label: Southern Fried Records

What we liked about Nick Dresti’s take on ‘I Would Die For U was its ludicrous, big, shiny intergalactic approach to a classic Prince song. By way of a contraction though, what makes this album suck is exactly the same thing. Well almost.

Coming about as close to George Michael and Prince as you could possibly get outside of a lavatory cubicle, ‘Always and Forever’ is little more than the eager delusions of a slick fantasist. ‘Crazy Talk’ is to all intents and purposes a Prince tribute song. It’s the same camp, helium vocals, the same funky slap and tickle – but it’s embarrassingly devoid of all those neat little word-plays from the diminutive despot himself. And without them it falls flat. ‘Funky Love’ suffers a similar fate, except this time it’s a George Michael number. No worse than Modjo, but no better.

Only the Scritti Politti derivative ‘Prove Me Wrong’ manages to charm. The rest of it is pure drivel, and presently the only turkey on the menu at Southern Fried Records.

Avoid at all costs.
