For all those who care Rocky, Diesel and Ashley Beedle are back. There might not be any David Byrne or ‘Lazy’ by way of shattering chart announcement but there is whimsical, wako-psycho in the making Tim DeLaughter of the Polyphonic Spree here to redraft Harpers Bizarre’s flower-waving ‘Witchi Tai To’ as a stomping, bell-tinkling psychedelic club anthem (bit like ‘Hole In My Shoe’ on uppers) and Lambchop’s Kurt Wagner to add his own brand of hoarse gospel grammar to ‘interesting’ single, ‘Give It’. In addition to these B-List screwballs, weird 1980s pop act Kissing the Pink are dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st Century with the squelchy, rubbery grooves of ‘Enjoy The Ride’, ‘Light My Soul’ and a couple of other equally average tracks.
Music you can listen AND dance to. It’s a brief that’s been around for awhile and usually to mixed results. Let’s face it, for every ‘Blue Monday’ and ‘Kinky Afro’ you have ‘I’m In The Mood For Dancing’ and the ‘Birdie Song’. The difference this time is Ibiza – and this is still very much the direction the boys have taken.
It’s not bad, I suppose, but do folks really still give a toss either way?
