Think all French music is like Serge Gainsbourg, Air or Daft Punk? Well it is, quite frankly; if what you infer by these choice icons of gallic downtempo and disco-chic is nothing short of the bloody marvellous.
Whilst there’s no suggesting the Paris based Source label is the only arrondissement de music pour Francais – there is a very definite bias towards it. Rivalled only by ‘Luaka Bop’ for the curiously (though choonfully) avant-garde, Source can on this evidence alone be applauded for side-stepping the usual mores of fashion to deliver a couple of breezy slap and tickles to the underarm of the industry.
And here we have the evidenced trussed up in two ever so classy minimalist clean jackets: the now legendary SourceLab compilations.
Selected from over seven years of the series, it could no longer be deemed that the SourceLab compilations are a last-minute showcase for the deeply unfamiliar fraternity of French underground.
Shimmering with grooves and slinky beats, the ‘labs’ provide a worthy consideration of Source’s pedigree to date: Air, Alex Gopher, Motorbass, Daft Punk, DJ Gilb’r. Get it to be cool, get it to woo the ‘hoes’ – get it because you like it.
The source of greatness is knowing when to listen…not just shout.
