Just how much imponderably skittish and offbeat nonsense from Iceland can a man take? Having names like Gunnar Örn Tynes, Örvar Þóreyjarson Smárason and Gyða and Kristín Anna Valtýsdóttir seems to give folks the right thesedays to make wobbly, unpredictable and melancholy tracks like new single ‘Nightly Cares’ and bonus track ‘Once A Shiny Morning’. At one time only Liz Frazer and the Cocteau Twins were given the remit to proffer such wildly eccentric and ingenuous pearly dew drops drops. Now ányone with a weird áccent on their náme can do it.
‘Nightly Cares’ starts off with a barely audible keys passage, a crazy infantile woman’s voice whispering an estranged lullaby and some lightly tripping break beats. It also ends like this. So what’s in the middle? Well more of the same to be fair. But what’s more remarkable is the fact is actually works.
Lovely and consoling post-apocalyptic rock.
(did you know that Icelandic is one of the few modern languages which uses the Old English characters ð (eth), þ (thorn) and æ (ash)?)
