It’s an admirable and noble enough intention; the extraordinary journey of the Children at the Agape orphanage in South Arfica, who form a choir and use their not inconsiderable talent and music to help them overcome personal tragedy. Having lost their parents to AIDS at an early age, the children discover that they can use their collective voices to strengthen their spirit and inspire and engage others – travelling from the Orphanage to New York to raise awareness of the impact of a disease that seems to occupy an increasingly (and frighteningly) lower profile in the West. The upside is that the children’s journey was filmed by Channel 4, screened on August 2nd and is now available on DVD.
The film, directed by Paul Taylor, has already picked up a number of awards on the international festival circuit including the prestigious Audience Award at this year’s Edinburgh International Film Festival.
The children performed to a standing ovation longside Annie Lennox at the 46664 concert which honoured Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday celebrations at Hyde Park in June.
Extras on the DVD include footage from that concert, an update on Agape today and a meet the children section in addition to footage from a London performance and an interview with the film’s director
