Here’s a perky enough proposition: born in Oklahoma, raised in New Orleans and currently making a home in the City of Angels (that’s a really cool way of describing Los Angeles, between you and me). Let’s face it, most folks are unlikely to have heard of the band but ‘Future Sons and Daughters’ is their third album and what’s on offer is this: a sultry, wandering, roadworthy collection of tunes as soft and engaging as a lover’s whisper and as smouldering as a stack of Morricone vinyl placed too close to the rads (wouldn’t it just warp? well that’s another matter). ‘A Complete Unknown’ scores a few snake-hip-swivelling moves before breaking out in a vaguely Brazilian sweat. ‘The Other Side’ takes the road-trip forward, guitars chirping like cicadas and a dreamy swarm of vocal harmonies swelling like a mist around the headlights. It’s a little bit Frank Black and a little bit Fountains of Wayne.
It’s steady, it’s absorbing and though lacking any truly incendiary tunes or devices, it’s a bonafide retro ear pleaser.
