Don’t really know much about the band and a quick look on their Twitter page yields few clues. They’re feeling ‘totally absorbed’, working on new material that sounds a little ‘heavy’, have just been to the gym and like seeing a little bit of snow from time to time. It’s not Lennon’s ‘In His Own Write’ or Nikki Sixx’s ‘Heroin Diaries’ by any means but then what else do you expect from Kings Cliffe?
Technically Fenech-Soler have yet to bother the charts. Last year’s debut release, ‘The Cult of Romance’ failed to register and the band’s biggest hit to date, ‘Stop and Snare’ – with its shimmering, spectral synths and breathless, honey vocals – peaked at a disappointing 102. This release should change all that though, packed as it is with razor-sharp tunes and more snap-out-of-it energy than an adrenaline shot to the heart.
Ben Duffy’s eager vocal buzzes excitedly between the grandiose falsetto excesses of 80s icons like Billy Mackenzie and the romantic hue and cry of ABC’s Martin Fry – electro-pop at most dazzling and delirious. Those with even a casual interest should check out the prickly, static stabs of ‘Lies’ and the slippery white magic of ‘Contender’. Think along the lines of Bodi Bill and Junior Boys flirting shamelessly with Bat For Lashes.
